Gem of True Sight (Gem) is an item that you can purchase in the home shop in the "miscellaneous" section. Only 1 Gem per team can be purchased for 900 gold and cannot be moved to your backpack. Buying this item is a choice that has to be carefully weighed due to the possible investment lost, as well as the stock cooldown of 10 minutes in the shop, having just one in stock, and negatively impacting any heroes on your team that rely on invisibility. Cyber-sport.io prepared a couple of fascinating facts about this item in Dota. Let's roll!
Gem of True Sight has 2 abilities. First things first, its passive True Sight effect grants the wearer and his allies the ability to see invisible creatures and wards within a 900 radius.
Secondly, the active ability – Reveal that passes through magic immunity and reveals invisibility in a 300 radius, revealing even wards and creatures in the fog of war for the last 4 seconds. Bear in mind that Gem reveals enemies in the ability's area of application, even if they are in the fog of war, and also applies their invisibility reveal. The effect of the aura is delayed for 0.5 seconds.
Of course, Gem cannot detect opponents under the effect of Shadow Dance but can reveal opponents under the effect of immunity to reveal invisibility from other sources. The visual effect in the selected area is only visible to the team that cast the ability. The impact of revealing invisibility is given in a radius of 900 regardless of the actual examination of the carrier. It is entirely unobstructed. Revealing invisibility does not work if the item is in the inventory of a courier or Lone Druid Spirit Bear.
For the last five years, Gem’s price “inflated”. In 6.78 patch price increased from 700 to 850. Then 6.79 check rose from 850 to 900, simultaneously in the “Grand” 7.00 patch True Sight effect was nerfed and currently no longer works on illusions.
Gem of True Sight is a risky contribution because it drops to the ground on death and gives an enemy a free chance to pick it up. Therefore, Gem of True Sight should only be bought when your hero has enough survivability or when you are running out of other True Sight items. While pos-5 heroes often acquire Gem of True Sight, holding Gem on pos-3 or pos-4, who are less likely to die and lose it is better.
In the early game, when heroes are more focused on lane farm, Sentry Ward is a more effective item to avoid “unexpected” invisible heroes. Due to True Sight being a passive aura, it becomes an effective but expensive item to detect nearby invisible enemies constantly.
Gem of True Sight can be the best contribution in the late game, even when the enemy has no invisible heroes. You can purchase Gem to take out enemy’s Wards (Observer and Sentry Wards) for a long time without any problems since the only alternative item for this is Sentry Ward. Still, it can easily be wasted if the location of the enemy wards is unknown.
A bug with the Gem of True Sight allows you to get an overview of a small area on the map (for example, in Roshan's lair) until the end of the game. At the same time, the object itself is destroyed in the process.
A year ago, when buying Eaglesong and Gem of True Sight in Dota 2, it evolved to get a new item - Eagle Eye. The artifact appeared in the game with the release of patch 7.31, but it was not mentioned in the changelog on the official website. The artifact granted a True Sight passive, +35 agility, as well as the active ability of Predator's Gaze. It provides vision in a 300-radius area up to 1,500 units away for 6 seconds on a half-minute cooldown.
Anyway, Gem of True Sight is a valuable item in the game, and whether to buy it or not is up to you or your team.
