First appearances of Primal Beast in Competitive Dota

5 min read
On August 23, Valve released a new patch - 7.32. In this patch, the Primal Beast hero has been added to Captains mode, which means he is now available for selection in the competitive scene. Since the patch was released during the Riyadh Masters 2022, some teams dared to try it in their matches. At that moment, Doters only chose Primal Beast for the third position, that is, he could not even be flexed on lanes. Due to the lack of experience with the hero, the teams did not want to risk relegation from the tournament, so his pick rate was meager. Only the Nigma Galaxy team, namely MinD_ContRol, took more often than others, which did not help his team go far in the tournament.

First appearances of Primal Beast in Competitive Dota

Weeks went by, and in high-ranked pubs, one could notice an increase in the hero's popularity because now they can be used for official matches. We can see the result of the achievements of professional players now: more than 2600 matches at a high rating, this is now the fifth hero in terms of pick rate. Most games are still in the third position, but the hero also began to take the fourth position as a midlaner. The win rate in all positions is almost the same - in the range of 50%. Thus, Primal Beast became essential to teams.

Primal Beast and EEU qualifiers

Let's look at the hero based on his appearances in the EEU qualifiers. Most of the hero was picked by Natus Vincere. In all games, this hero could be seen performed by Swedenstrong. They always got a range three for liaise - Visage or Death Prophet in the lane under such an aggressive four. In his build, Swedenstrong chose Arcane Boots and Blink Dagger. The starting purchase and leveling of abilities depending on the game situation. In the game: the hero creates pressure on the lanes and rotates around the map when getting initial levels. In the mid-game, he initiates by buying Blink Dagger and regularly pushes lanes with Trample and Onslaught. Also, Primal Beast was picked once, each in the fourth position with identical builds of Slayer from Mind Games and RodjER from BetBoom Team.

Primal Beast and Outsiders

Next, let's see his performance in the central corridor. HR.re1ble and Outsiders.gpk~ picked one in each of their matches. Both players chose to take Bottle, Phase Boots, Black King Bar, and Kaya and Sange. The ability build focuses on Trample and then Uproar. Game scenario: at the initial stage of the game, Primal Beast has high characteristics of its attributes, i.e. high base damage and health reserve, which, in combination with Uproar, gives us a significant advantage over the enemy in resource exchange and last hitting. In the mid-game, the hero is still powerful, as his abilities have a fast cooldown and a high kill potential, which helps to solve the necessary macro tasks on the map. In the late stage of the game, the hero can significantly fall out, as the enemies are overgrown with defensive artifacts, and his abilities do not deal much damage anymore - he becomes a walking target.

Primal Beast and Pari Parni

Also, Primal Beast was used in the hardline at least once, in the third position, by a player from the Pari Parni team - 9Pasha. Item Purchase: Soul Ring, Phase Boots, Black King Bar, Blink Dagger, and Refresher Orb. Also in this game, according to the situation, Lotus Orb was bought. The gameplay is similar to the mid one, so the buildup of abilities is focused on Trample and Uproar.

Summing up about Primal Beast, I must say that the players have found a use for this hero and he seems to have entered the meta well. True, it’s worth saying that the hero's win rate in these qualifications is unsatisfactory, only 33%. Therefore, is it worth considering the hero so successful? The choice is yours!
