On November 5th, 2024, The MongolZ secured their third international title of 2024 by winning this year’s Thunderpick World Championship. They faced off against HEROIC in a best-of-five grand final and won the series 3-1 to take home the $500,000 prize. The MongolZ were very confident going into the grand final as they boasted a dominant form the entire tournament, dropping just two maps overall.

The MongolZ had also defeated high-ranking teams like FNATIC and Imperial on their way to the grand final and were surely not going to let HEROIC off the hook that easily. With all that said, it’s no surprise to see that The MongolZ were the favorites going into the grand final, with most of the crowd supporting the underdogs.

How did the grand final go down?

The first map was the classic Dust2 that HEROIC had picked which, unfortunately, did not go so well for them. HEROIC was unable to garner much of a lead in the first half as both teams were tied 6-6 before The MongolZ ran with it in the second half, securing a 13-9 victory on HEROIC’s map pick.

On map 2, Ancient, HEROIC bounced back with equal measure, returning the favor by pulling out all the stops in the second half in order to secure a 13-6 win on The MongolZ’s map pick. Part of the reason why HEROIC were able to cement their moment on map 2 was thanks to the 1v3 pistol round clutch from Damjan "kyxsan" Stoilkovski that kept the half in their favor, forcing The MongolZ to concede the following round.

HEROIC tried to keep up the momentum on map 3, Anubis, starting off strong with a 5-2 lead by The MongolZ sprung into action to more than just equalize matters in the second half. The map intensified as The MongolZ’s had a 12-6 lead that quickly turned into 12-11; fortunately, the Mongolians did not give into the pressure and closed out the map 13-11.

The players on HEROIC were exhausted by the end of map 3 as losing a map when a genuine comeback is just in sight is very demotivating. This became very apparent as The MongolZ surfed through the first half with a 10-2 lead that eventually led the way to a 13-3 win and overall series victory, granting the Mongolians their third international title for 2024.

Aftermath: The MongolZ rise in rankings

Coincidentally, after The MongolZ lifted the trophy at Thunderpick World Championship 2024, HLTV revised their rankings later on the same day. The MongolZ are ranked #11 in the world, close to the top ten for October 2024, and for those unaware, this is how HLTV’s ranking system by 1xBet works:

“Our team ranking is based on teams' achievements over the past year (with severe decay in points throughout each month), recent form over the last two months, and performance in recent events in the last 3 months. Each team is required to have a three-man core in order to retain their points. Online matches and tournaments are included, but with a diminishing factor which means they cannot make a big difference among the top teams, and mainly serve to put new teams on the map.”

On the other hand, if we look at Valve’s volatile global rankings on the same day, The MongolZ rose to #5 after winning Thunderpick World Championship 2024, boasting 1711 Valve points.
